The start of my birding journey, Colorado.

I went on a work trip from April 6th - 13th in Broomfield Co.

It’s only about 15mins away from Boulder, 30mins from Denver, and 2hrs from Rocky Mtn National Park.  I saw some beautiful birds on a mountain hike and decided to start Googling to see what they were and boom, a new hobby was born!!  Here’s what I saw.

  • Magpie:
Even though this bird is very common in the area I had never seen/noticed one.  Blue being my favorite color this bird instantly attracted my attention.  Magpies are brave birds, the sight of a human won’t run them off; which is another reason I couldn’t help but notice it!  Cool fact:  Lewis and Clark noted that these Magpies used to come into their tent and steal their food!  Hah!

  • Western Kingbird:
This was a very beautiful, eye-catching bird!!  I do believe it was also a songbird.  However, it could have been another bird singing and I may just be too new at this to know the difference.  The Western Kingbird is a fly catcher that’s pretty common to western North America.  They are VERY aggressive and will chase intruders as large as Hawks!!!  Making them all the more awesome!  They flash crimson feathers when they are feeling tough; they usually keep these feathers hidden under their grey crowns.
